When the Morrisons man hands you onions, you make… French onion soup. Idiot that I am, I ordered six bags of onions, not six onions, in a recent online shop (Barry did the same with oranges a few years ago), and made it my mission to use them all in delicious recipes.

Easy peasy pain au choc
I do most of my grocery shopping online (the “big” shop), so I don’t even remember how I found them, but JUS-ROL have started making pain au chocolat in a can*. They give you the pastry and the mini chocolate sticks and you take all the glory of hot pastries, straight from the oven.
Jamie’s pannacotta
One of the things I wanted to do this year was to make certain desserts from scratch. One was New York Baked Cheesecake (I’ve made this twice now, it was so delicious), another is profiteroles (which I haven’t managed yet), and the third, after watching many episodes of Masterchef, was pannacotta.
Simple recipes: krispie buns
You know they’re ker-azy because they’re spelled with a Z.
This is another adaptation of my mum’s recipes from when she was at school (for her easy peasy buns/cake recipe, click here). The adapted bit’s where I lick the golden syrup spoon. These take about 5 minutes to make. Less if you set everything out on the counter like in Jamie Oliver’s 30 minute recipes. In that case, this would take about 3 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 level tbsp sugar
- 2 heaped tbsp cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp golden syrup
- 100g margarine
- 100g cornflakes or rice krispies
Method
Melt everything except the cereal in a pan, don’t let it boil. Take off the heat and mix in the cereal well. Use spoons to share the mixture between around 12 bun cases, pretty ones if possible. Lick spoons. Lick pan.
Here’s some I made for the NCT crew this weekend. Nom.
Pork!
Barry mistakenly thought he was going to get a mini hog roast for the princely sum of £2.99 recently. When the leg of a pig arrived (£2.99/kg), we were surprised. Not as surprised as our fridge, which is usually just full of Diet Coke.
We thought this may be a tad too much eating for two, so Charlie and Jaime came over with Finley again (hint, hint, Charlie, it’s your turn to cook!), and we had the most amazing roast dinner! I’m not usually one for pork, but this was gorgeous. I can take no praise for this one – I was at the hairdresser all morning.
He roasted the pork in shallots, garlic, rosemary, thyme (those two from our garden), and put whole apples in to roast with it, which were so delicious (we ate them like apple sauce).
We also had pepper pot cake for pudding (not sure why it’s called that, it’s got apples in it). I was so full you could have rolled me down a hill and I couldn’t have stopped myself.
We went to see Tenacious D in Manchester last night, they were absolutely fantastic! Great show.
Also popped some stuff on eBay this week, including our red drawers. Hopefully they’ll go to a good home (one that will give us lots of money for them, as they’re discontinued!).
To finish, Barry thinks the empty wine bottles in the kitchen look nice. I think they look a bit like a recycling plant, but there you go. Anyway, I tarted them up a bit with some sage from the garden. How pretty!
Easter weekend
Hope everyone’s stuffed themselves silly over the Easter weekend, I know we have!
Not much DIY done this weekend, only a bit of painting.
We had one of Barry’s brothers and his girlfriend over on Friday, and Barry cooked a lovely meal. On Saturday I baked (evidence on the right). No evidence is left at our house, as my mum came over on Sunday with her friend. Yesterday we had a Sunday dinner and my friend Louise came over and we finally met her boyfriend. Phew!
Somewhere in the middle there, we went to Ikea, only to find, shock horror, it’s actually closed on Easter Sunday! We consoled ourselves with TGI Fridays and went home.
